Seth Rosenberg, Founder & Principal

Seth has nearly 30 years of experience as an executive working with startup ventures as well as for market-leading entities. He also has significant experience in the not-for-profit sector; he has served on multiple boards of directors – including four years as board president of Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts – and is currently the Executive Director of Dreams of Hope. Prior to Socius, Seth was Vice President of Commerce and Finance for Marconi plc. Earlier in his career, Seth was a long-time employee of FORE Systems, Inc. Joining FORE when it had 12 employees and $1 million in revenue, he was part of FORE’s initial and secondary public offerings and seven acquisitions as the company grew to more than 3,000 employees and nearly $1 billion in revenue. At the time FORE was acquired by Marconi, Seth had worldwide responsibility for treasury, risk management and investor relations. He has been involved in the formation and launch of multiple companies as a founder, investor, consultant, and director. Seth has extensive experience in strategic planning, grant writing, team building, business development, capital formation, corporate finance and treasury operations, technology commercialization, risk management and investor relations. He holds a B.B.A. degree and a M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts and a M.B.A. degree from Duquesne University.

  Richard D. Ekstrom, Principal

Rich has served as an executive or consultant for public and private healthcare and biotechnology companies for over 20 years. The technologies include therapeutics for infectious diseases, analytical and diagnostic tools, genetically engineered crops, pharmacy benefit management and data mining. Previously he was with Westinghouse Electric Corporation for over 20 years, where he served in a variety of management positions including controller, manufacturing manager and corporate staff positions. He has extensive experience in licensing, business development, strategic planning, fund raising, financial modeling and structured problem-solving techniques. Rich holds a B.A. degree from Cornell University and an M.B.A. degree from Boston University. Rich is currently Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Coro Center for Civic Leadership and Board Member at the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative.  He the author of The Backwords Dictionary, and he is actively engaged in promoting awareness of the impressive Westinghouse Memorial in Schenley Park

William S. Weil, Principal

Bill has over 30 years of marketing, IT and managerial experience, and directs Socius' web marketing division, published as Pittsburgh SEO, and is the acting Director of Marketing for LIFE Pittsburgh.  He is a recognized expert in website planning, design and development, social media, search engine optimization (SEO), email newsletters, blogs and online surveys. Bill has founded multiple companies, including PositionLab, a marketing consultancy focused on positioning small to mid-sized companies; GUIdance Technologies, makers of an object-oriented programming environment; and Computer Possibilities, a creator of documentation and training materials for artificial intelligence software platforms.  He has served as CEO, Marketing Executive, Software Product Manager, Third Party Alliances Manager, and created two consulting practices.  Bill has helped found, raise money for, and manage more than a dozen companies.  He has also served as Adjunct Professor in Duquesne University's School of Entrepreneurship.  Bill created LovePong, a unique interactive relationship game for couples and is the author of New Earth Relationships: A Guide for Couples in the 21st Century and From Intuition to Entrepreneurship: A Woman's Guide to Following her Dream. He holds a B.A. degree in English Magna Cum Laude from the State University of New York, and an M.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Joseph E. Barron, Principal

Joe has over 30 years of experience identifying, evaluating, commercializing and managing investments in emerging technology as a start-up entrepreneur, corporate development executive and member of a private equity group. His corporate development experience includes leading global merger and acquisition activity, corporate venture capital and strategic planning in the areas of SaaS, data analytics, data and network security, communications systems and software, engineering services, public safety systems and alternative/renewable energy. His expertise at developing fundable business plans, financial models and investment presentations for emerging technology companies have successfully secured early stage investment capital. He works with early stage companies providing executive management services, and with business accelerators and universities on building entrepreneurial ecosystems to better commercialize funded research. As a member of the management team of Blue Tree Allied Angels, with $32 million invested in 42 portfolio companies, he has been involved with identifying and screening over 1000 investment opportunities. He also represents Blue Tree at the national Angel Capital Association Cleantech Investors consortium, is a founding member of the Alliance for Innovation & Business Development in central Pennsylvania, and serves on the Board of Directors of the MIT Enterprise Forum Pittsburgh and several privately-held technology companies. Prior to Socius, Joe was VP of Corporate Development for FORE Systems / Marconi plc., a multinational technology company with $8 billion in sales. He led an international team responsible for recommending, evaluating and negotiating equity investments, strategic alliances and acquisitions worldwide, including due diligence and integration activities. Earlier in his career he was co-founder and Test Engineering manager at Teleprobe Systems which developed test and monitoring systems for the communications industry. After a successful IPO, Teleprobe was acquired by Harris Corp where Joe served as Product Line Manager with $20 million P&L responsibility. Joe has an Electrical Engineering Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and is a graduate of the Harris Corporation's Executive Management program with follow up course work at the Wharton School of Business. He holds several patents in communication systems design.

  Linda J. Hoffman, Ph.D., J.D., Advisor

Linda’s principal focus is on intellectual property in conjunction with biotechnology, with an emphasis on taking ideas and concepts from the laboratory bench to market. Linda combines understanding of life sciences research with expertise in intellectual property, providing a unique perspective to our team. She has over 15 years of experience in life sciences research, lectures at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles. Linda holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Pittsburgh and a J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh Law School. She is a member of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and United States Patent and Trademark Office.

 

  John Lipinski, Associate

John has 10 years of managerial experience in various positions with Procter & Gamble and Warner Lambert. With Warner Lambert, he was Manager of New Product Development. With Procter & Gamble, he managed the Super K Mart account. John also has start-up experience working with Ebuyxpress as Director of Sales & Marketing, and CMC Matrix, a medical technology company he co-founded. He is currently a Professor at Robert Morris University in the Department of Management. John holds a Ph.D. in Corporate Strategy from the University of Pittsburgh and a M.B.A. degree from the University of Michigan.

 

  Matthew W. Bootman, Principal Emeritus

Matt has over 23 years of experience in the tissue engineering, medical device, biomaterials, polymer, drug delivery, tissue adhesives and personal care industries.  He has been a co-founder of several companies and has extensive experience in: new technology evaluation; moving new technologies from laboratory through pilot phase and into manufacturing; managing FDA and USPTO processes; forming strategic alliances; and, managing joint ventures in both start-up and large international organizations.  He has proven interpersonal skills in managing research and technical personnel as well as interfacing with business partners.  Matt holds nine patents and has another three pending.  He has B.A. and M.A. degrees in Cell Physiology from the University of California at Santa Barbara and has been trained as a mechanical engineer.

 

  John R. Bugos, Principal Emeritus

John has over 15 years of experience as a management consultant and as a financial manager, working with companies ranging from early stage startups to FORTUNE 100 multinationals.  He was a management consultant with Booz, Allen & Hamilton and Deloitte & Touche and held senior financial management positions with FORE Systems, Inc. and Marconi plc.  In addition, John has served as CFO for several early-stage technology companies and provided financial consulting services to many other such companies.  He has extensive experience in strategic planning and analysis, business development, forecasting and competitive analysis.  John holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and a M.B.A. degree (focused on corporate finance) from Carnegie Mellon University.
 

  Charles T. Day, Principal Emeritus

Charlie has over 30 years of experience as an attorney, tax accountant, management consultant and entrepreneur.  Prior to Socius, he spent seven years as a self-employed consultant serving the provider side of the nation’s health care industry, dealing principally with capital formation and transactional issues.  Earlier in his career, he was a tax partner and national consulting partner within the healthcare industry at Coopers & Lybrand, LLP.  Charlie has been involved in the creation and launch of a number of companies and has extensive experience in strategic analysis and planning, joint venturing, business development, technology commercialization and venture financing.  He holds a B.B.A. degree from the University of Michigan and a J.D. degree from the University of Detroit.  He is also a Certified Public Accountant.
